For ten years, Milk & Madu has grown from just one location in Berawa to another in Ubud and Batu Bolong too, with an Uluwatu branch also opening soon. Not only that, but for a decade Milk & Madu has been the staple destination for anyone looking for great breakfast and brunch in Canggu. Even with so many other options popping up lately, we still think that Milk & Madu is one of the best cafés in Bali.

What we enjoyed most about Milk & Madu is the open space and the high ceilings. No matter how hot it is outside, stepping inside and sitting in one of the chairs or sofas makes us feel cool and relaxed. The vibe of Milk & Madu also hasn’t changed in the slightest, as it attracts like-minded people, making the place vibrant with conversations, laughs, and stories.

The house Sangria and the Atlantic breakfast menu are enough to make us return, though we wished we could have tried more of their food. But adding live music four times a week and various promotions and offers as well are a few reasons why Milk & Madu is always at the top of everyone’s mind when thinking about getting breakfast and brunch in Canggu.

Kids-Friendly Café

There are only a handful of kids-friendly cafés in Canggu, but Milk & Madu has a dedicated mini playground for kids on one side of the establishment. If you come here with your little ones, they can play to their hearts' content while you enjoy the delicious food. A win-win solution!

First Impression

A cool breeze will welcome you once you step inside Milk & Madu, where you can enjoy an open space and semi-outdoor seating. Milk & Madu looks spacious, and there are different seating areas you can choose from, whether in the middle or the back of the café. The wooden ceilings and the high roof certainly help to maintain the cool air circulation inside. You won’t feel stuffed at Milk & Madu, even on the hottest day in Bali.

Our Favourites at Milk & Madu

Though Milk & Madu is famous as a breakfast place in Canggu, its menus are perfect for more than breakfast or brunch.

Our Recommendations from the Meal Menu

Among their dishes, we picked three that we absolutely loved because every bite was full of flavours when we tucked in.

Milk & Madu Berawa - the selection of food

🍽 Atlantic (IDR 120K)

There is nothing better to start your morning than this salmon gravlax with scrambled eggs, crispy capers, and pickled shallot; it’s perfection!

🍽 Crispy Corn Fritters (IDR 90K)

Another breakfast winner for us, this combination of crispy bacon, avocado salsa, jalapeño, and coriander cream is a burst of flavours in your mouth.

🍽  Truffle Mushroom Cacio e Pepe (IDR 190K)

Milk & Madu is also famous for its pizza and pasta, and this pizza with wild mushroom, cheese, cream, and black pepper really seals the deal for us.

Our Recommendations from the Drinks Menu

Juices, coffee, and teas are staple breakfast drinks, but Milk & Madu also makes the best drinks to accompany your afternoon and dinner.

Milk & Madu Berawa - the selection of drinks

🍸 House Sangria (IDR 95K)

After beating Bali’s heat, unwinding in the afternoon with a glass of Sangria sounds like a perfect choice, don’t you think?

🍸 Passion Fruit Caipirissima (IDR 120K)

The blend of rum, passion fruit, and lime makes up this irresistible drink to start your evening.

🍸 Madu Margarita on the Rocks (IDR 120K)

You need to conclude a great dinner with a Tequila and vanilla agave, completed with a chamoy rim.

We picked Atlantic and Truffle Mushroom Cacio e Pepe for the meals and decided to go with House Sangria and Madu Margarita on the Rocks for the drinks. We also ordered Chorizo Croquetas (IDR 65K) and Anzac Apple Crumble for dessert (IDR 80K). The total bill came close to IDR 800K, and we were full!

What We Like and What We Don't

Two cups of coffe in Milk & Madu Berawa cafe

Milk & Madu has established itself as the one café in Canggu that everyone must visit at least once when they visit Bali. For a café to last ten years in the business in Bali is an achievement but, aside from our good experience, we also need to mention things they can fix because dining is more than just having a good meal; it’s an overall experience.

What We Like

  • The breakfast menu is one of the best in Bali. No matter what time you arrive at Milk & Madu, you can order the breakfast menu until 4 PM, and that’s because the options are extremely delicious!

  • There are many offers and events throughout the week. Whenever you come to Milk & Madu, chances are they have offers on. In a place like Canggu, where the food prices have increased, saving a couple of bucks is certainly something about this place that we appreciate.

  • The outdoor kids playground makes it a great family-friendly café in Canggu. There aren’t many kids-friendly cafés in the area, and the fact that they have one in a place like Canggu is a big yes in our book.

  • The open space and lively ambience. The lack of partitions and the semi-open seating promise that, even on the hottest day in Bali, you will feel cool sitting here without air-conditioning.

  • The food delivery options. Milk & Madu also offers delivery options through Grab and Gojek, making it super convenient if you want to taste their delicious breakfast but cannot visit their restaurant in Berawa.

What We Don't

  • The knowledge of the staff about the product could be improved. We understand that the turnover in the service industry in Bali is high, but if we have to wait for an answer about something on the menu then we seriously wonder what happened during the onboarding period.

  • The food's inconsistency in taste is questionable. It was not our first time at Milk & Madu, and there seems to be an inconsistency in the taste. Whether they changed the recipes or the chef, it differed from the last time we visited.

  • Service can be slow during peak hours, especially around breakfast and lunch. If you come here for breakfast or lunch, be ready to wait at least 30 minutes (or more) for your drinks to arrive.

Expert Opinion About Milk & Madu

Ten years is long enough for Milk & Madu to establish itself as one of the best breakfast spots in Canggu. Though the building is new after the previous site was burned down in 2018, nothing changed drastically, from the taste of their food to the service, albeit with a little hiccup here and there. Generally, we still highly recommend Milk & Madu as a place to have more than just breakfast and brunch.

One thing we like about Milk & Madu is the vibrant ambience, which hasn’t changed one bit. You cannot see it; you only feel it when you sit there and watch everyone enjoying their meals and conversing. We think this explains why everyone keeps coming to Milk & Madu because they know how the place makes them feel.

With additional cafés in Ubud and Batu Bolong (and soon in Uluwatu), Milk & Madu has consistently delivered quality food and service at value for money. We certainly hope that you give it a try and get ready to come back again!

We always enjoy coming here!  Great food, good service and a nice atmosphere. You can have breakfast there very well and dinner was also good. The staff is always friendly and in a good mood. Many thanks to Desak for the great service last night. Also cool to know that there is a free scooter parking service. You should try it out!

This breakfast spot is absolutely fantastic! From the mouthwatering açai bowl to the exquisite eggs Benedict, every dish was a delight. Their diverse array of non-dairy options, including almond milk and oat milk, cater to every dietary preference. The lively ambiance, complete with live music, combined with the impeccable service from their attentive staff, made for an unforgettable dining experience.

Ordered the truffle mushroom pizza, calamari and broccoli. Had the happy hour, nice highball with strawberry soda, rather unique and sweet. Went on a Friday night for dinner and there was an amazing singer who played all sorts of instruments and made the cafe ambiance soooo lovely. Thank you for the wonderful dinner experience!

Hi everyone! My name is Catur, and I was born and raised in Central Java. I moved to Bali in 2011 but left the island in 2016 before returning in 2018. Bali feels more than a home to me, and maybe that’s why my name feels like a premonition. Catur means four, both in the Balinese and Javanese languages. It is spoken like ‘c’ in chess, which is also the meaning of my name in Indonesian.
