Things to do in Gili Islands
What to Expect from Gili Islands
The trio of Gili Islands is like three siblings with different personalities but oozes the same charm. Gili T, Gili Air, and Gili Meno give the island experiences you can’t get on Bali Island. Though there are plenty of what to do in Bali, the Gilis give the best excuse to get you away from the crazy traffic.

Overview of the Gili Islands
Gili Trawangan
Don’t call yourself a partygoer if Gili T is absent from your list of a must-visit island. The biggest island among the trio, Gili Trawangan, is a never-ending bar hopping, dance, and cocktail. Wherever you walk, you will bump into crowded and lively beach bars, ready to rock your night. But Gili T is not just about killer cocktails or sipping the beer under the stars.

While your night always includes the dance floor, you should spend the day underwater. Put on the oxygen tank at Manta Point to get the sightings of mantas or Halik, where every spot is adorned with giant barrel sponges and sea fans. Another great thing about Gili T is you can find the most bougie accommodations, from private pools to budget hostels with basic amenities. And price-wise, you get more value for your bucks as the island is small, so chances are you get a sea view without spending a fortune.
Gili Meno
If Gili T is your happy-go-lucky sibling, Gili Meno is the quiet one. The tiniest Gili packs the most tranquil vibe. Known as the honeymoon island where lovebirds can walk along the white sand beaches with turquoise waters in the background, Gili Meno doesn’t bar a single traveler from visiting. Yes, you’ll feel like the third wheel, but the island has other things on its sleeve other than its obvious romantic vibe.

The saltwater lake is a prominent trait of Gili Meno. Surrounded by mangrove forests, it’s the only one in the Gili Islands, giving you a nice break from any beach activity. However, you cannot miss snorkeling in Turtle Point to spot Hawksbill and Green turtles. Don’t miss to see “Nest,” the 48 life-size underwater statues created by Jason deCaires Taylor, taking the romantic vibe of Gili Meno even further near BASK, an eco-resort worth staying in.
Gili Air
Gili Air acts like the middle child: not too loud and not too quiet. If you think Gili T has too much of a party vibe and Gili Meno is a tad too quiet, then Gili Air acts like the bridge of the other two Gilis. Choose the western part of Gili Air, where the night parties, themed events, and cocktail bars will fill up your evening activities. It’s the axis of social life and vibrant vibe of the island. If you prefer a peaceful vibe, check the east and south parts of the island, where many secluded beaches will take your breath away.

Snorkeling and diving in Gili Air Island have become the must-do activities. The coral gardens showcase colors like you’ve never seen before. If you love muck diving, you will find that Air Harbor will satisfy your search for critters. The steep wall dive in Air Wall gives plenty of pygmy seahorses and octopuses to see. Step into the night market where local food is king and a chance to know how cheap the food is.
How to Get to the Gili Islands from Bali
Now you have general ideas about the Gilis in your pocket, we’ve got you covered about how to get to the Gili Islands from Bali.

Fast boat. By far the most popular way to reach Gili Islands from Bali, you can leave from Padang Bai harbor as it only takes about 1.5–2 hours to reach Gili T. Departing from Sanur or Serangan is an option, but the journey time is double, and the schedule is fewer than if you choose Padang Bai. The average ticket price is US $25–45.
Flight. You can fly to Lombok because it takes only 30 minutes. But an additional 90 minutes is needed to travel from the airport to the port, and another 15 minutes to Gili T. The flight costs around US $60.
Ferry. Technically, you will hop off in Lombok, the main island. Perfect if your main purpose is to explore Lombok and not the Gili Islands in particular. The trip takes about six hours from Padang Bai harbor to Lembar in Lombok and will take you about US $5.
Booking tips:
Always book in advance. Though last-minute booking to the Gili Islands from Bali is possible, you need to arrange transport to get to Padang Bai harbor, and that alone takes time.
Go in the low season. It means don’t go during the end-of-the-year holiday or before Silent Day, as these times can be hectic.
Best Time to Visit the Gili Islands
So, when should you start planning to visit the Gili Islands while in Bali? Similar to the best time to visit Bali, the dry season is your best bet. April to October should give you plenty of sun with occasional rain, but without hindering your sea activities. The calm sea conditions also play a part in your boat leaving on time and having smooth sailing.
We don’t recommend traveling in the rainy season, which occurs from November to March. Aside from the heavy rainfall and not the kind of weather you want in a tropical getaway, the sea surfaces can be rough with big waves. The condition can lead to cancellation of your boat schedule. But if your main goal is seeing manta rays, diving in the rainy season is the best since the giant fish eats plankton, which is abundant during the wet season.
Activities and Attractions in the Gili Islands
Diving and Snorkeling
The question of what to do in the Gili Islands is best to shift how much time you have to spend on the island. Let us give you pointers about the best diving and snorkeling spots around the three Gilis.
Simon’s Reef. The 35-meter seamounts are the perfect place for corals to thrive. You can find hard and soft corals, from staghorn to plate corals. Triggerfish and angelfish are abundant around the corals.
Deep Turbo. Deep Turbo can compete with the best diving spots in Bali as the dive spot is full of barracudas, stingrays, and macro creatures like pygmy seahorses and nudibranchs.
Turtle Point. Seeing turtles while snorkeling in Bali is a rarity, but in Turtle Point, get ready to see Hawksbill and green turtles, which are abundant around the Gili Islands.
Meno Bounty. Just south of NEST underwater statues, there’s a large 30-meter sunken platform. The hard corals and fish, like angelfish and scorpion fish, will greet you around Meno Bounty.
Island Hopping
If you carefully pay attention to the Gili Islands map, there is no bridge connecting the three islands, unlike Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan. So, how do you do island hopping? We’ve got the answers!
Ferry. The ferry is running twice a day, in the morning and afternoon. The option makes perfect sense if you only want to go to other Gili Islands to stay or spend a day. It costs only around US $3, and it’s the most economical choice to hop from one Gili to another.
Fast boat. Run every 30 minutes from 8 AM to 5 PM, and it’s the quickest option as it takes only 5-10 minutes. If you really want to do island hopping in a day, this is the best choice. It costs around US $5/one way.
Water taxi. Similar to a fast boat, the difference is the water taxi operates until midnight. If you crave nightlife in Gili T but are staying in Gili Meno, the water taxi will solve your problem easily.

Gili T is full of beach bars, but for us, nothing comes close to the quintessential beach bar vibe like Gili Teak Beach Club. Go barefoot before you sit on the bar stool, snacking Gambas Al Ajillo with a beer in your hands and chatting with the bartender. As the sun dips, it’s your cue to order the Sizzling Fajita Plate or Coconut Chicken Wrap along with the lychee mojito to start your evening.

Hit the dance floor — still barefoot, we hope — as the Gili Teak Beach Club attracts more people. Imagine dancing under the moonlight with the ocean breeze, dimmed fairy lights, and Pina Colada.
