Overview of the Gili Islands
Gili Trawangan
Don’t call yourself a partygoer if Gili T is absent from your must-visit list. The biggest island among the trio, the map of Gili Trawangan is full of a never-ending bar hopping, dancing, and cocktails. Wherever you walk, you will stumble upon crowded and lively beach bars, ready to rock your night. But Gili T is not just about killer cocktails or sipping beer under the stars.

While your night always includes the dance floor, you should spend the day underwater. Put on the oxygen tank at Manta Point to get the sightings of mantas or Halik, where every spot is adorned with giant barrel sponges and sea fans. Another great thing about Gili T is you can find the most bougie accommodations, from private pools to budget hostels with basic amenities.
Gili Meno
If Gili T is your happy-go-lucky sibling, Gili Meno is the quiet one. Known as the honeymoon island where lovebirds can walk along the white sand beaches with turquoise waters in the background, the tiniest Gili doesn’t bar a single traveler from visiting. Yes, you’ll feel like the third wheel, but the island has other things on its sleeve other than the obvious romantic vibe.

The saltwater lake is a prominent trait of Gili Meno. Surrounded by mangrove forests, it’s the only one in the Gili Islands, giving you a nice break from any beach activity. However, you cannot miss snorkeling to see “Nest,” the 48 life-size underwater statues created by Jason deCaires Taylor, taking the romantic vibe of Gili Meno even further near BASK, an eco-resort worth staying in.
Gili Air
If you think Gili T has too much of a party vibe and Gili Meno is a tad too quiet, then Gili Air acts like the bridge between the other two Gilis. Choose the western part of Gili Air, where the night parties, themed events, and cocktail bars will fill up your evening activities. If peace is what you’re after, check the east and south parts, where many secluded beaches will take your breath away.

Snorkeling and diving in Gili Air island have become the must-do activities. The coral gardens showcase colors like you’ve never seen before. The steep wall dive in Air Wall gives plenty of pygmy seahorses and octopuses to see. And if you’re looking for something to surprise you, head into the night market, where you can try the local foods for less than US$3.
How to Get to the Gili Islands from Bali
Now you have general ideas about the Gili in your pocket, we’ve got you covered on how to get to the Gili Islands from Bali.

Fast boat. By far the most popular way to reach the Gili Islands from Bali, it takes about 1.5-2 hours to reach Gili T from Padang Bai Harbor. You can depart from Sanur or Serangan, but the journey time is double with fewer schedules. The average ticket price is US$ 25-45.
Flight. Flying to Lombok takes only 30 minutes. But you need 90 minutes to travel from the airport to the port, and another 15 minutes to Gili T. The flight costs around US$ 60.
FFerry. Perfect if your main purpose is to explore Lombok and not the Gili Islands, since you will embark on the main island. The trip takes approximately six hours from Padang Bai harbor to Lembar in Lombok, and the cost is around US$ 5.
Booking tips:
Always book in advance. Since you need to arrange transport to Padang Bai, last-minute booking is not recommended.
Go in the low season. It means don’t go during the end-of-the-year holiday or before the Silent Day, as these times can be hectic.
Best Time to Visit the Gili Islands
So, when should you start planning to visit the Gili Islands when traveling to Bali? Similar to the best time to visit Bali, the dry season remains the best. April to October gives you plenty of sun with occasional rain without messing up your sea activities. The calm sea conditions also play a part in your boat leaving on time and having smooth sailing.
We don’t recommend traveling in the rainy season, which occurs from November to March. Aside from the heavy rainfall, the sea surfaces can be rough with big waves. The condition can lead to the cancellation of your boat schedule. But if your main goal is seeing manta rays, diving in the rainy season is the best since the giant fish eats plankton, which is abundant during the wet season.
Activities and Attractions in the Gili Islands

Deep Turbo. Deep Turbo can compete with the best diving spots in Bali as the dive spot is full of barracudas, stingrays, and macro creatures.
Turtle Point. Seeing turtles while snorkeling in Bali is a rarity, but at Turtle Point, get ready to see Hawksbill and green turtles, which are abundant around the Gili Islands.
Meno Bounty. Just south of NEST underwater statues, there’s a large 30-meter sunken platform. The hard corals and fish, like angelfish and scorpion fish, will greet you around Meno Bounty.
