Affordable Stays in Bali: Budget Hotels, Hostels, and Guesthouses

Bali is known for its luxurious villas and fancy resorts, but trust me, that’s just one side of the story. In this guide, I’ll share my favorite areas for affordable stays, tips for spotting the best deals and avoiding falling into the “cheap but disappointing” trap. Let’s find your perfect place without blowing your budget!

  • Affordable Accommodation Types in Bali

Let’s break it down: what types of affordable accommodation in Bali are there?

    Type of accommodation

    What to expect

    Additional services

    Average prices

    Hostels

Think dorm living — rooms shared with 4–12 people, sometimes more. Bathrooms and kitchens are communal, and rooms are typically mixed or women-only.

Essentially, none. You do your own cooking, and cleaning. Some offer free simple breakfasts. Paid laundry services are usually available.

    USD 10–20 per night.

    Hotels

Private rooms with a bathroom, no kitchen, but usually a mini-fridge to keep your essentials cool.

    Basic housekeeping.

    Off-season — USD 15–20 per night.

High season — USD 25–35 per night.

    Guesthouses

Small private houses or complexes with 6–12 private rooms, often with a shared kitchen and usually a pool, though there are exceptions.

None. Sometimes, you’ll come across a simple breakfast.

    Off-season — USD 20–25 per night.

High season — USD 35–40 per night.

Other options include apartments and villas. Occasionally, you might find some affordable options, but they’re rare and usually not what I’d call budget-friendly stays in Bali.

  • Best Hostels in Bali for Budget Travelers

  • 1. Kuna, Ubud

Just seven minutes from the Monkey Forest, this hostel in Udud is a great base for exploring the city. It offers 4, 8, and 10-bed dormitory rooms, both mixed and women-only. The price includes bed linen, breakfast, a yoga session, and a 15-minute massage. Plus, there’s a pool to cool off in.

Plan for eating out, as there’s no communal kitchen — just a bar where you can order food and drinks. They also require a USD 6 cash deposit, which you’ll get back upon checkout. One important note: there’s an age restriction — you must be between 18 and 40 years old to stay here.

From the heart: this is one of the best hotels in Bali in terms of value for money. I wouldn’t call it the best budget hotel because, yes, it’s pricier than the others — around USD 140–160 per room for 1–2 people.

    Sources: @theroompadangpadang, www.booking.com

  • Insider Tips for Booking Affordable Accommodations

To book accommodation in Bali at the best price, here’s what I recommend:

    • Book directly. Skip the booking platforms when you can — hotel websites often have lower prices since they don’t include platform commissions.

    • Plan. The earlier you book, the better the deal — especially during Bali’s busy season.

    • Choose packages. They’re cost-effective for you and a great deal for the hotel.

  • FAQ

Which area in Bali offers the most affordable accommodations?

The best areas for budget accommodations in Bali would be Ubud, Denpasar, and Sanur. Sure, areas farther out, like Lovina, might be even cheaper, but you’ll spend extra time and money traveling to Bali’s main attractions.

What daily budget is recommended for a trip to Bali?

I’d say USD 50 per person per day, excluding accommodation, is a good estimate. It’ll cover food, activities, taxis, and tours — but don’t expect any luxury at that budget.

Is living in Bali feasible with a $1,000 monthly budget?

If you’re not counting accommodation, then yes, it’s doable. If you are, it depends on your preferences. Sticking to cheap meals at warungs or cooking in a hostel kitchen, along with free activities like nature and swimming, will keep costs low. But if you’re after shopping, restaurants, and spa treatments, plan for a bigger budget.

Expert opinion about Affordable Stays in Bali

Although there’s plenty of affordable accommodation in Bali, and this low-cost Bali travel guide features only highly-rated, trusted options, things can happen — especially regarding budget stays.

If you’re planning a longer stay — a month or more — I don’t recommend booking long-term accommodation online. Instead, reserve a place for a few days, arrive, and check it out in person. Sometimes, the reality doesn’t match the listing: the air conditioning might not work, the pool could be disappointing, or it’s too noisy. If you’re happy with the place, negotiate directly for a long-term stay. There’s often availability, and owners are usually willing to give you a discount!

Choose your area based on your plans, or you’ll spend extra on transport. Want to surf? Head to Bukit or Canggu. Looking for the best turquoise beaches? Find a spot in Bukit or Kuta.

In my experience, budget travel in Bali is pretty easy. Though prices have been creeping up lately, the island still has plenty of affordable activities and places to eat.
