Shelter Restaurant

I am Korean, and this was my first time visiting Bali. After spending a day in Padangbai and four nights at Umana Bali in Ungasan, this was the first place where I had a meal on my first day in Canggu. Overall, the food was really delicious, and the servers were very friendly. However, I was given instructions regarding the dress code. As a man wearing a sleeveless shirt and shorts, I was told that I had to wear a short-sleeved shirt provided by the restaurant. I was reminded twice to put it on right away. It was quite hot, but I had no choice but to wear it. When I was paying and about to leave, I noticed some male customers wearing sleeveless shirts, so I asked why they were allowed to do so. I was then told that a sleeveless shirt was acceptable as long as it was paired with long pants. However, when I passed by the restaurant again later, I saw a male customer wearing a sleeveless shirt and shorts. Most of the customers I saw were Westerners. I don’t want to assume that I was treated differently because of my race, and I sincerely hope that wasn’t the case. Until this experience, my impression of Bali had been extremely positive. Everyone I encountered had been warm and welcoming to outsiders, and even at a hotel like Umana, I was treated in a very relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. That’s why this experience, happening on my very first day in Canggu, was particularly disappointing and upsetting. If there is a dress code, I believe the standards should be clearly communicated and consistently applied to all guests. The restaurant does not seem to be an especially formal or highly sophisticated fine-dining establishment, so I found the situation even more difficult to understand. I truly hope that in the future, the dress code will be clearly explained and applied consistently to everyone, regardless of where they are from. When I was paying and leaving, I noticed other men wearing tank tops, so I asked why, and they said that wearing a tank top with long pants was acceptable. However, when I passed by the restaurant again later, I saw customers wearing tank tops and shorts. Most of them were Westerners. I do not want to think that I experienced racism in Bali, but my image of the island so far has been very welcoming to outsiders, and even hotels like Umana welcomed us in a free and relaxed atmosphere. Experiencing this as soon as I arrived in Canggu, I couldn\'t help but feel upset. It doesn\'t seem like an incredibly luxurious or formal restaurant, so if they are going to enforce a dress code, I wish they would clearly explain the standards.

Shelter Sessions number 12 was exceptional. Huge credit to Chef Steve and the team. Every dish landed, from the hand-caught fish to that smoked duck over charcoal. Absolute standout. Great food, warm vibe, wonderful staff, generous portions. It felt like a proper world-class experience. Book it if you can for 13. Or move your ass and just get to the restaurant!
