Shelter Bali
Like its name, Shelter aims to give you a hideout among the buzzing Canggu crowd. Chef Stephen Moore, whose experience includes Michelin-starred restaurants in Barcelona and Sydney, has created mouthwatering menus for you to dig into. The crackling sound and smell of the open charcoal grill and smoke from coffee wood deliver a distinctive Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cuisine flavour to your palate.
The striking stone and recycled timber in its semi-outdoor seating area and the tropical plants surrounding it create a laid-back atmosphere that envelops you once you step inside the restaurant. Shelter turns into an intimate space when the night falls and candles are lit. There is no better place than Shelter to share stories with a glass of wine and a signature black-angus rib-eye steak for an unforgettable evening.

All You Need to Know Before Coming
Reservation
Dinner time is hectic, so making a reservation is mandatory. To do so, head to Shelter’s official website, click on the Reservation button, and choose the date and time of your visit. You can also book through WhatsApp should you need any more assistance.
Parking
The Shelter’s parking is spacious enough for motorbikes, though when it’s full you need assistance from the parking attendant. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about cars, as parking is slightly limited.
Service
From the get-go, the reception staff was accommodating with the reservation before showing us our preferred table. The service staff was super friendly too and even gave us recommendations for orders.
First impressions
With the open grill in sight, the candles lit on the recycled wood tables, and the open space, there are no better words to describe it than warm and cosy. People seemed to enjoy the food everywhere we looked, so we also couldn’t wait for ours!
Our Favourite Dishes at Shelter Bali
The taste of the cuisine at Shelter is out-of-this-world and below are some that made us want to order more!
What do we recommend from the menu?
🍽 Roasted Eggplant (IDR 80K)
If you’re not a fan of eggplant, you will be after trying this roasted creation with whipped feta and candied chili dressing.
🍽 Roast Pork Belly (IDR 470K)
A 500-gram roast pork belly with black cabbage and spiced raisin jam is just perfection!
🍽 Ash Grilled Duck Breast (IDR 210K)
The Middle-Eastern fusion of wonderfully grilled duck breast with sweet molasses, spiced fregola, and dates is all you need for dinner.
What do we recommend from the bar?
🍸 Pepon Margarita (IDR 140K)
Fresh and spicy with tequila, pineapple, lime, and jalapeno!
🍸 Berry Cheesecake (IDR 130K)
Who can refuse the mix of vanilla-infused vodka, strawberry, cranberry, and fromage frais? Definitely not us!
🍸 Virgin Pina Colada (IDR 55K)
The non-alcoholic version is as refreshing and kicking as its alcoholic counterpart.

Pros and Cons
Pros
The ambience. Shelter really delivers its promise as a shelter with its tropical garden and semi-open space.
The food. The Ash Grilled Duck Breast and Roast Pork Belly are some of the tastiest we’ve had in Bali, but you can never go wrong with any of their grilled dishes.
The service. Everything from the reception to the servers showed what a true Balinese service was.
The drinks list. Though not heavy on the cocktails, theirs were excellent alongside the non-alcoholic drinks and wines.
The location. Strategically located but still maintaining its rural atmosphere, this is a winning factor for us.
Cons
The parking space. Forget about bringing a car, as finding a spot can be inconvenient.
The music. The music during dinner can be so loud for some people that you really need to speak up.
The price. The price is on the expensive side, even by Canggu’s standards.
Expert Opinion about Shelter Bali
There are reasons why Shelter is one of the busiest restaurants in Pererenan. The rural aesthetic, mingled with the Mediterranean and Middle-Eastern flavours, complement each other in perfect sync, making everyone feel welcome in its lush cocoon.
There is nothing else to be said about the food as everything we ordered was beyond expectations. Despite the high price tag, you get the laid-back vibes, the intimate space, and a nice dinner. Secure your table and experience all the great things about Shelter for yourself!

Reviews about Shelter Bali
How can you evaluate Shelter Bali
Hi everyone! My name is Catur, and I was born and raised in Central Java. I moved to Bali in 2011 but left the island in 2016 before returning in 2018. Bali feels more than a home to me, and maybe that’s why my name feels like a premonition. Catur means four, both in the Balinese and Javanese languages. It is spoken like ‘c’ in chess, which is also the meaning of my name in Indonesian.
