Crate Cafe Canggu
Crate Café has been a Canggu icon for 10 years, dishing out incredible breakfasts and coffee that keeps people coming back. We swung by early one morning to see what the buzz was about, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s a top spot for surfers who roll in at 6 AM, just in time for a post-surf refuel, and it wraps up by 5 PM, sticking to that laid-back, work-life balance vibe.
This is the café in Canggu you’ve got to try. We loved the avocado toast and smoothie bowls—total crowd-pleasers with portions that actually fill you up (unlike some pricier spots). The value for money is spot-on, and it’s clear why this place makes every "where to eat in Canggu" list.
The Wi-Fi here is also lightning-fast, making it a favorite hangout for digital nomads who need to stay connected. Our honest review? Crate Café hits all the marks: great food, chill vibes, and the best setup for working or relaxing over a cup of coffee.

All You Need to Know Before Coming to Crate Café

Reservation
No reservation is needed at Crate Café. Their system is first-come-first-served, so you can just come to Crate Café without any prior booking. It might be best to arrive a little early since they are always busy during breakfast, so expect a bit of queueing if you come during the peak hours.

The Parking Space
The parking spot at Crate Café surrounds the café's front and left side. It's enough for motorbikes, though it's too small for a car to fit in, especially when the café is busy. The staff will also cover the motorbike seat, making sure it doesn't get hot when you're leaving the café. This small gesture is very thoughtful and highly appreciated.

Welcoming Service
When you arrive, you need to place your order at the cash register and pay. The staff will give you a number, and then the waiter will bring your order to your table.

First Impression
Crate Café is not where you find intricate and detailed décor, as the space is simple but functional. But what makes Crate Café charming and inviting is not merely the place but the sense of community, which every customer has helped to create an unmistakable friendliness and togetherness.

What We Like and What We Don't
Crate Café is more than just a place to eat and, as much as we enjoyed the meals here, there are a few suggestions to make customers feel more comfortable.

What We Like
The food is delicious, and the coffee is unbelievably strong! The food at Crate Café is really good. They serve classic Canggu breakfast menus, which are definitely among the best in the area.
Value for money. For the amount that we ordered, the portion and the taste were really worth every penny.
Strong Wi-Fi connection. If you're looking for a place with stable and fast Wi-Fi in any café in Canggu, Crate Café is the top choice. It's ideal for quick work, like checking emails.
The unique design and community atmosphere. Crate Café values community greatly and this is shown through the space design, which has no partitions to support a communal atmosphere.
Numerous vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options are available. Many of their menus are gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan, making it the perfect spot for anyone looking for plant-based dishes for breakfast.
What We Don't
The long queues, especially during peak breakfast hours. With only one cash counter, the queue can be long, and we saw some people turn back once they saw the long line.
It was noisy and crowded. Although this can be avoided by coming in early or after the peak breakfast hours, we saw some people get up and leave once they finished their meals to help make up some space.
There was a long wait for the food to arrive. We noticed that we had to wait close to 30 minutes for our food and some people had to wait even longer.

Expert Opinion About Crate Café
Ten years is not a short period to maintain the ambience and quality you'll find at Crate Cafe. Nevertheless, they've proven themselves as the go-to place for breakfast in Canggu, and the fact that it's always busy is a testament to how popular and legendary their reputation is.
One of the best things about Crate Café is the affordability of their menus. It's hard to find similar places in Canggu at the same price point, where the cost is justified for both the portion and the taste. The long queues, the waiting period for the food, and the slightly underwhelming toast we had are drawbacks, but Crate Café is still a recommended place to hang out and have breakfast or brunch in Canggu.
The Crate Run and the exhibition at Crate Café have further cemented its place as more than just somewhere to eat. Indeed, Crate Café has always been about community and, even though the development in Canggu is unavoidable, the café still stays true to its commitment to bringing the Canggu community together.

How can you evaluate Crate Cafe Canggu

Hi everyone! My name is Catur, and I was born and raised in Central Java. I moved to Bali in 2011 but left the island in 2016 before returning in 2018. Bali feels more than a home to me, and maybe that’s why my name feels like a premonition. Catur means four, both in the Balinese and Javanese languages. It is spoken like ‘c’ in chess, which is also the meaning of my name in Indonesian.
