Alchemy Cafe in Ubud is a haven for raw, organic, and vegan delights, right in the heart of Bali. We visited for an honest review, and it’s safe to say this spot is a must-visit for plant-based foodies.

The place gets busy, especially around lunch, so booking ahead is a smart move. Located on Jalan Penestanan, Alchemy’s cozy, rustic vibe and signature salad bar make it a standout in Ubud’s cafe scene.

On our page, you’ll find genuine reviews, a sneak peek at the menu, and simple reservation tips—all in one place to plan your perfect visit.

The Parking Space

The parking is quite spacious for motorbikes for a restaurant located on Jalan Penestanan. Though you can park a car, it may be wiser to use a motorbike, or else arrive by taxi or Grab/Gojek.

First Impression

If you're wondering where to eat in Ubud for a vegan café, Alchemy is going to be your best friend. As most of its menu is raw, only selected items are cooked under 43 degrees Celsius to maintain its full nutrients. They also have a section at the front where you can shop for organic home care and personal products, making Alchemy more than just a place to have delicious vegan and raw food.

What We Like and What We Don't

As a pure vegan, raw, and organic restaurant, Alchemy Café deserves praise for introducing the concept of vegan and raw food on the island. However, based on our experience, we also have a few notes for enhancement.

What We Like

  • Fresh and organic ingredients. Everything at Alchemy Café is fresh and organic, and this is one of the biggest magnets for people to visit.

  • The variety of the menus. Vegan and raw food tend to get a reputation for not being diverse but, at Alchemy, you'll have an incredible selection to choose from.

  • The hygiene. Alchemy Café is one of the cleanest cafés we have ever visited, not only due to its cleanliness but also because of how the staff handle the food.

  • Alchemy Café is located on a prime street in Ubud. Finding it is easy; even if you have to ask people, they will happily show you where. The parking spaces are also quality, as many restaurants on this street often don't have parking.

  • The atmosphere is unmatched for a café focusing on vegan and raw food. With two floors, you have the freedom to choose which one you want to sit in, but there is no difference in terms of ambience and vibe.

What We Don't

  • The price is on the higher side. Most of the items on the menu are quite pricy for Bali standards, and we couldn't justify the cost.

  • Some of the food needs an acquired taste. Many dishes on the menus are raw and only selected dishes are cooked so, if you're not used to it, you need to adjust.

  • The portions of some dishes are quite small. The portions can be small, meaning we had to order more items on the menu to be really full.

Expert Opinion About Alchemy Café, Bali

As the first vegan café in Bali, Alchemy Café has stood the test of time for 13 years, even when similar concept cafés have became popular. With another branch in Uluwatu, Alchemy Café's mission to encourage people to have a balanced and healthy lifestyle through clean eating is spreading across the island, even if you're not vegan.

Though there are many vegan cafés in Ubud, Alchemy Café is still one of (if not the most) popular among Ubudians and tourists. Despite the high price that we had to pay for the food and drinks, nothing beats the taste and creativity of the kitchen with their diverse selection of vegan and raw food.

An accessible café for everyone, Alchemy Café has proven itself as more than just a place to have vegan food. With the addition of a culinary school, spa, and yoga center, this is an institution that enables guests to have a spiritual experience that does not only rely on food.

Alchemy Café focuses on the goodness of ingredients that Mother Earth has provided, creating food that is wholly vegan, raw, and gluten-free, sourced from local and ethical ingredients as a way to maintain a balanced life. Encouraging people to care about their health and well-being, which in turn will help those around them, is the core value at Alchemy Café.

A beautiful vegan cafe, clean, forward-thinking menu and design, with protein options, that doesn’t require sitting on chairs.

Hi everyone! My name is Catur, and I was born and raised in Central Java. I moved to Bali in 2011 but left the island in 2016 before returning in 2018. Bali feels more than a home to me, and maybe that’s why my name feels like a premonition. Catur means four, both in the Balinese and Javanese languages. It is spoken like ‘c’ in chess, which is also the meaning of my name in Indonesian.
