Get ready if you want to go shopping in Bali because the island offers everything you're looking for to shop 'til you drop! From Balinese arts and crafts at various local shopping art markets around the island to household items and designer clothes at boutiques and shopping malls (Kuta Beachwalk is an impressive shopping mall in the heart of Kuta), there are numerous shopping places in Bali that you can explore.

Take notes of these tips we're about to give you, including what are the best things to buy and some best places for shopping in Bali to your heart's content!

Girl and boy are having fun at the Balinese marketThese are a few tips before going on your way to spend your money:

  • Bring enough cash, especially if you plan to go to art and street markets, as they often don’t accept cards. If you plan to go to shopping malls, boutiques, or art galleries, chances are they will accept cards

  • Wear comfortable shoes and breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, as Bali weather can be extremely humid and hot. Also, prepare a hat and a bottle of water

  • Be bold enough to haggle, especially at art markets and street markets where they don’t put price tags on products. The first rule of bargaining is to go to half the asked price and leave if they don’t accept it. There’s a big chance they will offer a lower price. But always remember to be respectful

  • Snatching and robberies in Bali are rare, but it’s better to leave your valuable items in a safe deposit box in your room and always keep your purse close

  • Don't buy the first thing that you like, as there is a chance you'll find similar items in different places, possibly with a lower asking price.

  • Tips for shopping in Bali

Shopping in Bali is on many itineraries, but being prepared to spend money before you head out of your hotel is also crucial. Whether you stay in Kuta, Ubud, Canggu, or Uluwatu, there are general things to pay attention to when you shop in Bali.

    Payment Method Description

As a tourist destination, cash is still the king in Bali. If you shop in art and street markets, you must pay with cash. Just bring enough to buy items, including if you want to buy street food or drinks during your shopping spree.

A card is accepted in many boutiques or stores, so you don’t have to pay with cash, even though it’s still accepted.

    Tax Refund Description

There are several details to know if you wish to get refunded before your departure, as Indonesia’s Tax Refund policy is relatively new.

    • Make sure that you purchase at the stores showing a 'Tax Refund' or 'VAT Refund' sign. Otherwise, you cannot obtain a tax refund at the airport

    • The minimum total value of VAT is IDR 500,000

    • Items must be purchased within one month before your departure

    • If your VAT refund is less than IDR 5 million, it will be paid in cash in Indonesian Rupiah. If the amount exceeds IDR 5 million, it will be paid by transfer within a month. If you don't want the transfer, then you'll be paid by cash to the amount of IDR 5 million, and the rest of the balance is non-refundable

    • Keep your receipts and tax invoices (both copy and original) and apply to the DGT officer at the airport during your departure

The tax refund policy only applies to several international airports in Indonesia, including Bali, Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Medan, and Surabaya.

    Sustainability Description

Sustainability, especially in fashion, is making quite a wave in Bali. Some stores are already participating in this movement by only using natural fabrics in their products.

However, sustainability is not a common issue for most in Bali, especially those who mass-produce clothes. It will take time before everyone implements sustainable practices in their products.

    Language Tips Description

Knowing Indonesian is not mandatory, as many sellers can communicate in English. The quality depends on where you shop, but you can also learn some common words in Indonesian, like 'Terima kasih', for thank you, or 'Harganya berapa?' to ask about the price, and also 'Nama saya' to introduce your name. People in Indonesia and Bali always love when you speak a bit of Indonesian to them.

    Shopping Safety Description

Shopping in Bali is relatively safe as few fraud cases are reported. The most important thing is to bring enough cash (not too much) and always keep your purse in a safe place with you. If the sellers are persistent, you can always leave without conversing with them.

    Dress Code Description

Bali is a tropical island, so the weather is hot and humid throughout the year. The best way to have an enjoyable shopping experience is by wearing light clothes and breathable fabrics that absorb sweat well. Bring sunglasses and hats with you if necessary. Even if you shop in boutiques, shopping malls, or stores with AC, the sun outside can be scorchingly hot.

Hi everyone! My name is Catur, and I was born and raised in Central Java. I moved to Bali in 2011 but left the island in 2016 before returning in 2018. Bali feels more than a home to me, and maybe that’s why my name feels like a premonition. Catur means four, both in the Balinese and Javanese languages. It is spoken like ‘c’ in chess, which is also the meaning of my name in Indonesian.
