Hujan Locale, Ubud
Dining at Hujan Locale is a way to celebrate Balinese and Indonesian cuisine in a modern way. For Chef Will Meyrick, known as the man behind Sarong and Mama San in Seminyak, Hujan Locale is a manifestation of his desire and extensive travelling throughout the archipelago.
Hujan Locale highlights the alluring charm of Indonesian food and converts it into a fine dining restaurant specialising in Indonesian dishes made in a modern way with a touch of Balinese flair. These elements are shown in the building and decor, which echoes East Indies architecture with wide and tall windows and classic tiles. Walking into Hujan Locale feels like stepping into one of the museums in Jakarta, where each item is part of Indonesian history.
The sound of modern Indonesian jazz music makes the perfect soundtrack for each bite of the tender and juicy Brali Aga Grilled Pork or sipping your Coconut Mojito ‒ one of their crafted cocktails. Hujan Locale creates an idyllic and delightful setting for a group dinner, where everyone can order different dishes and share the richness and diversity of the flavours by using Indonesian ingredients and recipes as a base.

All You Need to Know Before Coming to Hujan Locale, Ubud
Reservations
Hujan Locale is not a place you happen to find out on a stroll, so making a reservation is mandatory through their website. You can opt to make a reservation for lunch or dinner by choosing the options available on the reservation page. Priority booking should be made at least two weeks in advance for a party of less than four, but this doesn't guarantee specific seating arrangements.
The Parking Space
Since Hujan Locale is located on a busy street on Jalan Sri Wedari, there are no dedicated parking spots for motorbikes or cars. For the utmost convenience, we suggest you take a taxi or Grab/Gojek.
Welcoming Service
If your table is not available yet, you can wait at the bar, and the staff are extremely attentive. This is why we suggest you make a reservation to secure a table, as the tables are full most of the time.
First Impression
As an Indonesian, the first thing that came to mind was entering a house because the layout and design resemble a pleasant social environment. The black-and-white photography on the wall, the green paint, and the print cushion scream classic old-school. If you can get a table on the second floor near the window, you'll be treated to a view of a small temple nearby ‒ definitely a sight to behold!
Our Favourites at Hujan Locale, Ubud
Different from many Indonesian restaurants in Bali, Hujan Locale takes street food and dishes from Indonesia and makes them modern without losing their authenticity.
Our Recommendations from the Meal Menu
Divided into Large Plates and Small Plates, each of the dishes we mention here offers the chance to surprise you in the most subtle way.
🍽 Scallop Ceviche (IDR 75K/pieces)
Combining scallops, kalamansi, and finger limes, this dish is a perfect start to your culinary journey at Hujan Locale.
🍽 Padang-Style Cumi Cumi Kalio (IDR 235K)
The squid is stuffed with minced prawn, bathed in curry sauce, and complemented with cassava leaves and petai, resulting in a rich and creamy goodness.
🍽 Steamed Ikan Bumbu Kuning (IDR 225K)
Served in a bamboo shot, the steamed fish with lemon basil and chillis wrapped in banana tastes smoky with enough heat.
Our Recommendations from the Drinks Menu
Just because it's an Indonesian restaurant doesn't mean it doesn't serve alcohol, and the crafted cocktails at Hujan Locale are going to be the best complement to your Indonesian dishes.
🍸 Chilli & Lime Margarita (IDR 130K)
Tequila with honey, pressed citrus, pineapple, and chilli is exactly what you need as a refresher.
🍸 Pala Gin Mojito (IDR 135K)
Gin mojitos with nutmeg, lemon, mint, and sugar syrup give a hint of spiciness yet are strong enough to wake you up.
🍸 Sagara (IDR 135K)
The lemongrass is distinct in the drink, along with the gin, lime leaf, lychee, salted water, and tonic.
Our order of two Scallop Ceviches, Steamed Ikan Bumbu Kuning, and Padang Style Cumi Cumi Kalio, with additional Chicken Martabak (IDR 140K) made for some enticing meals. We decided to go for Chilli & Lime Margarita and Sagara for the drink, with Pineapple Granita (IDR 85K) and Chocolate & Passion Fruit Tartlet (IDR 85K) for the dessert. Our total bill was about IDR 1,400K, but each of those dishes was spectacular!

What We Like and What We Don't
Hujan Locale stands out among other Indonesian restaurants because it elevates the Indonesian dishes into something lavish yet still feels grounded. There is a lot to like about Hujan Locale, but a few things can be upgraded to create a seamless dining experience.
What We Like
The authentic menu with a modern twist is an excellent concept. With over 17,000 islands, it's hard to know which one is authentic and which one is not. Instead of mulling over the word authentic, Hujan Locale takes the most important ingredients and interprets them into something even greater.
The decor and the little details on every corner are carefully selected. We can attest that the inside of Hujan Locale resembles the old houses that our grandmothers and grandfathers used to live in, and that authentic ambience is hard to replicate.
The portion is justified for the price! We didn't expect the portion to be quite so big for its price because we expected it to be less. What a nice surprise!
The cocktail selection is not extensive, but they take classic and infused Indonesian ingredients to blend with the theme. Even with only one ingredient, it alters the taste of the cocktails to a new experience.
The service is impeccable! The service from the beginning while we were waiting for our table to be ready to when we got served was full of smiles and attentiveness, adding another vital factor: friendliness.
What We Don't
No parking means you need to find a space somewhere if you arrive by motorbike or car. Though this is not Hujan Locale's fault, we hope for something to be done about this.
The food serving can be slow, especially during dinner time as the tables are almost always full. As a restaurant that has been in the business for a decade, we didn't understand why the service should be delayed despite having enough staff.
A priority booking just doesn't make sense. We didn't understand the term 'priority booking' when the customers cannot even guaranteed seating arrangements. What's the point of having a priority booking?

Expert Opinion About Hujan Locale, Ubud
Hujan Locale's greatest draw is that they're not going down the traditional recipe route. Instead, they creatively translate traditional Indonesian recipes in a modern way to earn a place among fine dining establishments. Whether you sit downstairs or on the first floor, Hujan Locale still delivers a classic ambience via its interior design.
Meaning 'rain' in English, Hujan Locale soothes its visitors into a breezy atmosphere with a touch of elegance and superb flavours. Though the restaurant is actually perfect for a family-style dinner ‒ although with the policy of children under 12 are not allowed ‒ Hujan Locale is a great choice for groups of friends who want to try the adventure of Indonesian dishes.
We still highly recommed Hujan Locale because this is what Indonesian dishes should be: traditional yet modern, and worthy to be served in a fine dining restaurant. Book yourself a table and get ready to take a journey across the Indonesian archipelago via Will Meyrick's love child of Hujan Locale.

Reviews About Hujan Locale, Ubud
How can you evaluate
Hi everyone! My name is Catur, and I was born and raised in Central Java. I moved to Bali in 2011 but left the island in 2016 before returning in 2018. Bali feels more than a home to me, and maybe that’s why my name feels like a premonition. Catur means four, both in the Balinese and Javanese languages. It is spoken like ‘c’ in chess, which is also the meaning of my name in Indonesian.
