  • How to choose Restaurant in Ubud for Dinner: Notes from Local Expert

✅If a host practically tackles you at the door, run the other way! That's a sure sign it's a tourist trap, and you won't find any locals chowing down there.

✅For a truly romantic evening, seek out a spot with soft, intimate lighting, maybe a charming garden patio, and a short, sweet menu that proves they do a few things exceptionally well.

✅Always look for tasting menus — it’s the best way to understand the place and try all the signature dishes.

✅If you don’t know where to go, go to Monkey Forest Road. It’s a central resto hub where you’ll definitely find a spot to your taste.

✅Sticking to a budget? Your best bet is a bustling warung packed with locals after 7 PM. That's always the golden ticket to delicious, authentic, and affordable eats!

The restaurant collaborates with Michelin-starred chefs to craft its degustation menus, making it the perfect place to indulge in a symphony of flavors. Their signature lunch menu starts with canapés (don’t miss the Smoked Charcoal Puff — it’s absolutely otherworldly!) and takes you on a culinary journey featuring Scallops, Wagyu Beef, and even a fine-dining twist on PB&J. Vegan and vegetarian options are also available.

Apéritif is one of the most romantic restaurants in Ubud. Beyond its intimate ambiance, the restaurant offers a seven-course romantic dinner package (around USD 153). • 9. Locavore NXT

Many consider Locavore NXT not just the best restaurant in Ubud but perhaps in all of Bali! It’s a celebration of Indonesian ingredients and a true food revolution. Dining here isn’t your typical restaurant experience. Just 15 minutes from the center of Ubud, you’ll find a sustainable culinary hub complete with solar panels, beehives, and rainwater recycling systems. They even have a dedicated fermentation kitchen where they craft their oh-so-delicious ferments!

  • Find More About Ubud

Don’t skip these activities if you’re already in Ubud:

    • Pamper yourself in the best spas in Ubud before heading to your dinner reservation.

    • Kill time by browsing local handcrafted goods at Ubud Art Market, and don’t forget to bargain!

    • By the way, if you eventually find yourself in the city centre, it’s a good chance to go on a hunt for Bali souvenirs!

    • Need Wi-Fi to check your email or make a quick call? These cafes in Ubud will get your internet (and coffee) needs sorted.

  • Cheap, Local, Legendary — Top 3 Warungs in Ubud

  • 10. Sun Sun Warung

When I first heard about Sun Sun Warung, I never thought I would come back repeatedly. I couldn’t get enough of their scrumptious Bebek Betutu. Sitting on the floor (they have a proper seating area with chairs, don’t worry), cross-legged, their tender duck with sambal matah is one of the best foods in Ubud. Beyond the duck, they highlight other Balinese classics like Nasi Campur Langit and Ayam Sune Cekuh.

Sun Sun Warung is far from the shabby place you have in mind. On the contrary, it’s one of the tidiest, cleanest, and best local food places in Ubud I’ve ever visited! And if you fancy some local alcoholic drink, the Arak Cempaka is the one to try. It’s pretty strong, but the combination of Balinese arak and magnolia flowers tickled my curiosity.

Detailed Info about Sun Sun Warung

    • Where You'll Find It: Jl. Jembawan No.2

    • Recommended Dish: Bebek Betutu

    • Why I Love It: A truly homemade Balinese food

    • Price: IDR 260K/two people

  • 11. Sugriwa’s Warung

Honestly, Sugriwa’s Warung looks like a trendy cafe from the outside. But once I took a bite of the Tempe and Tofu Satay with peanut sauce, I knew Sugriwa’s Warung should be on everyone’s list of where to eat Indonesian food in Ubud. If you don’t mind the heat, the Fried Pork Sambal Matah will get you addicted, but a word of warning, it’s pretty spicy, even for my Indonesian palate.

Plan your dinner in Ubud on Monday and Thursday. Not only will the Soto Ayam and the chicken broth warm your belly, but they also have a traditional Balinese music performance from 7 to 10 PM. Trust me when I say listening to a live Balinese gamelan while having Indonesian food is a top-tier experience.

    Detailed Info about Sugriwa’s Warung

    • Where You'll Find It: Jl. Sugriwa No.7

    • Recommended Dish: Balinese Yellow Rice

    • Why I Love It: Simple food but rich flavors

    • Price: IDR 62K/portion

  • 12. Warung Makan Bu Rus

Among many Indonesian warungs in Ubud, Warung Makan Bu Rus is undoubtedly one of the best places to eat, and I recommend it to people! They have all the comfort food, from Nasi Campur Ayam to Bebek Goreng. Eating in the garden area surrounded by tropical plants, I feel like I’m visiting a friend’s house who’s throwing a dinner party rather than visiting a restaurant.

Lawar Daun Kelor will change your mind about moringa leaves, as I usually find the ingredient in the soup instead of turning it into a lawar dish. It makes the perfect way to start your meal before your taste buds get overjoyed with Balinese spices in the Gulai Babi or Ayam Gerangasem Bali (this one reminds me of my mother’s cooking, to be honest).

Detailed Info about Warung Makan Bu Rus

    • Where You'll Find It: Jl. Suweta No.9

    • Recommended Dish: Nasi Campur Ayam

    • Why I Love It: Cheap and authentic Balinese setting

    • Average Price: IDR 40K/per portion

  • Notes from Local about Balinese Food / Must-Try List

The first and only tip I can give is  always look for a warung brimming with locals. It’s where you can taste the best place to eat local food. So, what are the local foods to eat in Ubud?

    • Suckling Pig (Babi Guling) – If there’s one Balinese food you must eat in Ubud, crunchy pig skin and juicy meat should be it.

    • Nasi Campur – White rice with some meat, veggies, sambal (if you can handle the heat)

    • Lawar – It’s a mixed sauteed veggie and minced pork/chicken.

    • Sate Lilit – Minced pork, chicken, fish, or beef, wrapped on bamboo skewers.

Inside scoop: the most mind-blowing food isn't always in the fanciest places. Look for the lively, unassuming spots, especially where folks are happily eating with their hands.

  • Laid-Back & Tasty — Where We Brunch and Lunch in Ubud

  • 13. Rüsters

This is one of my favorite spots for breakfast or lunch in Ubud. It has a distinctly European café vibe, where you can enjoy expertly roasted coffee, indulge in dessert, meet friends for brunch, or sip on a craft beer in the evening. The menu is simple and familiar — think kale salad, eggs Benedict, and kebabs. Nevertheless, everything is absolutely delicious.

They’re big on their specialties, too! Here, you can always expect something new, with daily specials, a drink of the month, and even a sourdough of the month to keep things interesting.

    Detailed Info about Rüsters

    • Where You'll Find It: Jl. Raya Kengetan No.44

    • My Go-to Order: Braised Beef Cheek Pappardelle

    • Why I Love It: Artistic vibe meets industrial with a rice field view

    • Average Price: IDR 300K with cocktails

  • 14. Nusa by Suka

The second branch of a well-known restaurant originally opened in Nusa Dua. Their specialty lies in wood-fired dishes, so if you're a fan of grilled flavors, this is undoubtedly one of the top restaurants in Ubud for you. From grilled barramundi to wood-fired pizza with BBQ lamb ragu, expect smoky goodness and Mediterranean vibes in every bite.

Aside from the grill, the restaurant also serves homemade pasta. I particularly loved the truffle mushroom pappardelle, which feels like a quick culinary escape to Italy. It's also a great spot to bring your significant other. While it might not rank among the most romantic restaurants in Ubud in terms of ambiance, if your partner is a foodie, they'll definitely appreciate Nusa’s sharing menu featuring whipped hummus and plenty of grilled prawns.

Detailed info about Nusa by Suka

    • Where You'll Find It: Jl. Raya Ubud

    • My Go-to Order: 200G MB5 + Black Angus Picanha

    • Why I Love It: Relaxing vibe with the best wood-fired dining in Ubud

    • Average Price: IDR 550K with cocktails

  • 15. Zest

One of the most popular brunch spots in the centre of Ubud is Zest, powered entirely by plants. Yes, you guessed it right, this restaurant serves vegan food. As part of their plant-powered philosophy, they create tasty, straightforward meals that combine locally sourced whole foods with plant-based cuisine to enhance the flavour experience for customers.

However, you won’t find bland vegan dishes like plain tofu or alfalfa sprouts here. As they take veganism to a whole new level. Sweet potato wedges, umami asparagus, thick burgers, and juicy jackfruit slices are what’s available instead.

    Detailed info about Zest

    • Where You'll Find It: Jl. Penestanan No. 7

    • My Go-to Order: Vegan Fisherman Burger

    • Why I Love It: Creative, jungle-ish, and organic ingredients

    • Average Price: IDR 150K with Long Black

  • 16. Suka Espresso

Suka Espresso, created by the renowned Suka Collective, is a well-loved spot serving Australian-style dishes split into morning and afternoon menus. In the morning, you’ll find all kinds of eggs, salads, sandwiches, and bowls — two-thirds of which come with toasted sourdough or a brioche bun (both baked in-house). Come lunchtime, the menu broadens to include Thai influences (Prawn Thai Salad), Japanese twists (Wagyu Beef Burger), and of course, Indonesian flair (Pork Rendang Nasi Goreng).

Their coffee beans are sourced from Indonesia and South America, then roasted in-house to perfect each cup. A standout option is the Avocado Affogato, which adds a creamy avocado smoothie to the classic affogato blend. They also make their own vegan milk, so there’s something for everyone.

    Detailed info about Suka Espresso

    • Where You'll Find It: Jl. Raya Pengosekan Ubud No.108

    • My Go-to Order: Truffle Reuben Toastie

    • Why I Love It: Casual Australian-style cafe

    • Average Price: IDR 180K with a smoothie

Hi everyone! My name is Catur, and I was born and raised in Central Java. I moved to Bali in 2011 but left the island in 2016 before returning in 2018. Bali feels more than a home to me, and maybe that’s why my name feels like a premonition. Catur means four, both in the Balinese and Javanese languages. It is spoken like ‘c’ in chess, which is also the meaning of my name in Indonesian.
