Anniversary of Denpasar
The island’s capital, Denpasar, will be a blaze of colour as it celebrates its anniversary. This event has been going on for generations since the island was officially recognised as a colony in 1788! Derived from the words “den,” meaning “north,” and “pasar,” meaning “market,” the name of the modern city derives from its humble beginnings as a marketplace.
As a memorial to puputan, a mass suicide of Balinese warriors and nobles who chose death over submission to the invading Dutch in 1906, the Bajra Sandhi Monument is surrounded by lush parkland around which the festivities will take place. Several contests, cultural performances, community games, and parades will be part of the Denpasar Anniversary celebration on this day. So, pay your respects and celebrate the anniversary with the people of Denpasar this February.
